Going Green with
The Ogden Times
The times are changing
By Liza M and Logan K
Welcome to the first official Ogden times story,  as you may have noticed this is now a blog.   In this article you will learn reasons why this is so.   News reporters Liza M and Logan K sat down with Ogden’s AIG teacher Mrs.Leeds and asked a few questions about how they were “going green” with their new way of doing their news and future hopes for the growing website.  Here’s the facts from the  interview.

The first question they asked her was “What gave you the idea to go green with the Ogden Times this year?” Mrs.Leeds answered with the idea of saving money.   She said that they used at least 5 pages and printed roughly 40 copies!   Also, it was a concern that because of the size of stories and content, they were using larger and more expensive paper.  Also, most teachers were recycling the paper after one week leaving room for the next edition.  That’s what you call wasting paper!

Ogden Times reporters: How do you think this will inspire others to go green?
Mrs.Leeds: I hope it does remind others that digital is just as easy to access as paper, but I really want the kids to see the writing.   They will see all the different audiences.   On this blog anyone who wants to can see it but with paper, only the school can see it.  That’s another reason I love the idea of going green!

Ogden Times reporters: Why do you pick the stories that you do?
Mrs.Leeds: I don’t pick the stories.  The students pick the content.  It must be appropriate.  That was the one thing that was also a disadvantage with the newspaper.  We were limited on how much space and paper we could use. Through the blog, we had unlimited room for more info.

Ogden Times reporters: Who told you about the website?
Mrs.Leeds: I needed help with the “getting it set up’” part of it.  I heard about the website through a lady with a photography business who uses blogspot. She is an Ogden parent, Mrs.Erin Whittle.   I tried a different website but it was way to confusing.

Ogden Times reporters: When did you start to be concerned about the waste of paper?
Mrs.Leeds: After the first time! We started in March and realized then how much money it was going to be. We were using legal sized paper which is a bit more expensive.  I was so worried that I kept asking the office almost every few articles.

Ogden Times reporters: When did you become interested in having a school newspaper?
Mrs.Leeds: The fifth graders last year talked about writing and writing for different audiences. They came up with the idea of the  newspaper. To be honest, they exceeded expectations and accomplished more than you could imagine!

Ogden Times reporters: How do you think the readers will respond to the website?
Mrs.Leeds: Only time will tell. We are hoping that teachers will check this website daily and share the article with their classes
